Foothill survives four-point second quarter, tops Canyon Springs to advance to Sunrise finals
When the Foothill High basketball team scored just four points Thursday in the second quarter of its Sunrise Regional semifinal game against defending state champion Canyon Springs, the Falcons? players could have easily become frustrated. But they didn?t. That?s especially true for senior guard Greg Cox, who despite being one of the best 3-point shooters in Southern Nevada, misfired on several long-range attempts in the quarter.

Star Foothill receiver plays decoy, helps Falcons advance to Sunrise title game
There is no doubt Kyle Keplinger is the Foothill High football team?s top offensive threat. The senior wide receiver entered Thursday?s Sunrise Regional semifinal game against visiting Basic with 21 touchdowns, easily having his way with the opposition every week. So, what happens when Keplinger is held in check? Well, he still has an impact on the game.

Redemption Thursday: Region semifinals feature four teams out to avenge earlier defeats
Las Vegas High football coach James Thurman has stressed each week for his players to play a faceless opponent on Friday nights. Instead of worrying about the opposition ? whether weak or strong ? on the other side of the field, Thurman tells his players the first step to victory is executing their game plan successfully. On most Fridays in Las Vegas? weak Northeast Division, the faceless opponent strategy is not overlooking a struggling opponent. But Thursday in the Sunset Regional semifinals, the Wildcats will face a tall order in beating host Liberty (9-1). Not only did the defending Sunrise champion Patriots defeat Las Vegas in last year?s title game, they physically manhandled and dominated for virtually the entire night. The faceless opponent strategy might be a good idea for the other underdog teams in this week?s semifinals.

Memorable first half leads Foothill to second straight victory
If no one at Foothill takes the initiative to cut a highlight video after this season, the Falcons could always just throw on the film from the first half of Friday?s game against Canyon Springs.

Foothill senior leaving his mark on basketball program
Evan Roquemore had two goals for his senior season as a Foothill Falcon - lead his team back to Nevada's 4A boys basketball final four and see his college recruiting pick up. With a 14-5 record, Foothill is in first place and undefeated in Southeast Division play, and things are shaping up nicely for a deep run in the playoffs. That kind of team success — along with some stellar personal performances - Roquemore is receiving more attention from the next level.

Desert Pines' signal caller elevates his game
Nobody would have questioned his dedication if Desert Pines quarterback Dalton Leilua had decided to skip Saturday's Southern Nevada Coaches Association skills competition. After all, he had just competed in another recruiting event earlier in the day and had spent four hours driving back to Las Vegas from Moorpark, Calif.
But neither the long trip nor the back-to-back workouts slowed him down. Not much has in his career with the Jaguars.

Griffith Elementary School in Northwest Las Vegas has a unique lineup for its daily morning announcements.
They remind the kids of the school's mission statement, to always try their best. Then they give a "word of the day" to increase vocabulary, followed by any important daily announcements and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Then, at least in the Fall, they announce the New York Giants score.

Deep Coronado squad closes in on program's first state championship
A.J. McInerney watched helplessly from the sidelines as the Coronado boys' golf team allowed a one stroke lead to slip away in the final nine holes of the 4A state championship last year at TPC Las Vegas to cross-valley rival Palo Verde. McInerney, then in eighth grade, decided that day to set a goal of winning a state title before graduating in 2012.
But the second best freshman in the nation according to the Golfweek/Titleleist Performance Index might only have to wait a few weeks before that dream becomes reality.
